Classwork and Homework

Today in class, we first worked on a fluency writing prompt that will also help me know how to help you on your Process Analysis essay. We then went through a student sample of a detailed outline and an annotated bibliography, and followed this up with an activity where we looked at references and information from sources and compiled an annotated bibliography entry in groups. We finished up the class with a vocabulary review game. The PowerPoint for today can be found here.

Homework:
  • Detailed Outline and Annotated Bibliography (Draft 1) due on Monday, July 28th, by 5 pm on turnitin.com
  • Have a fantastic weekend! Yes, this is homework. I expect you to have a good weekend. :)

Classwork and Homework Helps

Today in class we briefly talked about the importance of creating our own personal study space. We watched a BYU Library advertisement that was a parody of this advertisement. The main thing that we talked about today was how to complete the detailed outline and annotated bibliography, and we practiced paraphrasing and note taking to help us with those tasks. Here is the PowerPoint that was used today.

Homework:
  • Draft your detailed outline for 20 minutes
  • Create an annotated bibliography entry for a paraphrase summary you have done for this essay (use the information below to help you :
      • Author: Roger Sipher.
      • Title: So That Nobody Has to Go to School If They Don't Want To
      • Title of Print Source: The New York Times.
      • Date: December 19, 1977
      • Page: 31
      • Type: Print
    • You can use citationmachine.net or Google Scholar to create the citation, but I want it to look like the example in your pink packet when it is finished.
Example:
Lewis, M., & Coates, D. L. (1980). Mother-infant interaction and cognitive development in twelve-week-old infants. Infant behavior and development, 3, 95-105.
  • Mother response to a baby is more important than stimulation from the mother.
    • Mother and child correspondence helps baby cognitively.
    • Stimulation was not shown to be a significant portion of cognitive development

Class today and homework

You should spend your time in the lab today formatting your reference page and adding in-text citations to your classification essay using the feedback that Miss Lutz has given you on turnitin.com.

Read the information here, use the documents, and ask a neighbor BEFORE you ask Miss Lutz for help.

First things first: Here is the APA Format Document that you should model your paper after. Check for margins, font, and justification.

How to cite wikipedia in APA? READ this blog entry:

For help with in-text citations look at the following sources:
For help with reference page citations use the following sources:
Still can’t find something?
  • Google: “How do I cite ______ in APA?”
One more thing to remember:
  • The MOST important information is the author name, date/year of publication, title, and source (like the website or book you found it in).
If you finish early, you may study Academic A List 7 on Quizlet. Choose the "Scatter" option. The person with the fastest time gets a treat tomorrow.

HOMEWORK:

  • Go to a tutor to fix your paper
  • Continue revising and editing your paper

This is a GREAT worksheet that gives examples for signal phrases (e.g. “According to _____”, or “_____ explains…”): http://www.davidglensmith.com/wcjc/PDFs/signal-phrases.pdf

Citation Creator (reference page):
Here is a link to a website that can help you create citations: http://citationmachine.net/index2.php, but BE CAREFUL, they are not always correct, so you have to check them.

Classwork and Homework

Today we learned about the "Excellence Is" competition and we started brainstorming for our own "Excellence Is" quotes that we will turn in on Thursday in class. The examples are in the PowerPoint for today, if you need a reminder/refresher. The next part of class we reviewed APA References, In-text citations, and signal phrases, and played a game to keep the energy high with some competition. :) Lastly, we reviewed the importance of the revising stage of an essay, which is what we will be doing this week.

Homework:
  • Spend at least 40 minutes total working on:
    • Your reference page (If you need help, here is an APA handout)
    • Developing other body paragraphs in your essay
    • Your conclusion
    • Drafting your “Excellence Is” quote
  • Go to a tutor and get feedback on your essay (You can do it this week or next week, just go!).
  • Bring a printed copy of your essay on Wednesday, because we will be doing a peer review.
THERE IS NO JOURNAL THIS WEEK! HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!

Classwork and Homework

For class today, we first talked about the different types of feedback that you can expect at the ELC. The feedback that I give you on your drafts is formative. We also reviewed citing sources in APA, and talked about both in-text citations and reference page citations. Next we talked about the differences between details/examples and commentary. Lastly, we broke into groups so that we could prepare brief presentations on good paragraph writing that will be presented tomorrow (make sure you know what you're doing!). The PowerPoint we used in class can be found here.

Homework:

  • Complete your last page in your purple packet, “The Real Thing.” This is due by 5 pm tomorrow.
    • You must have it all filled out, if you’re missing some commentary, write some more commentary, if you’re missing a detail, add a detail.
  • Draft 1 is due by 5 pm on Friday.

Draft 2 Helps & Homework

Today in class, we talked about credibility and how to make what you write more credible. Here is the PowerPoint that we used today in class. We also talked about how to format your papers and I showed you some sample essays.  While you work on your essay for the rest of the class, you can use these to help you.
  • Incorrect Essay Format - This is just here so that you don't make the mistakes you can find in this paper. Whatever you do, DON'T do this. :
  • Correct Essay Format - This paper shows a perfectly formatted paper except for the references. You will want the cover page and body of your essay to look as close to this paper as possible.
  • APA Paper Template - This is a template, which means that you can use it to start the formatting for your own paper. I would suggest downloading this, and then putting your essay into the format that is set up already for you. This has a perfect example of a Reference page.
  • Additional Essay Help - Are you still confused about how to organize your paper? This document gives you resources for organizing the paragraphs your paper (in point-by-point or block styles!), making better topic sentences, the requirements for draft 2, as well as page numbers in your book that can give additional help for all the things we've learned!
Homework:
  • Draft 2 - uploaded to turnitin.com
  • Journal - 2 pages in Blue Book, or 1 page double-spaced typed.

Classwork and Homework

Today in class, we looked at sources and APA. We hopped right in and learned from swimming in the deep end! :) The one thing I want to remind you of is to not stress out about this. We will have lots of time to get better at this throughout the semester!  Here is the PowerPoint we used in class (Use it to help you with your homework).

Homework:

  • Complete the APA Reference Game worksheet
  • Bring 3 sources that you have looked at or used when writing about your paper.
    • You need to have the author, year, title, and publishing information.
    • You can use the sources we used for background knowledge, or new ones that you have looked at to get additional information (The ones from a couple of days ago).
    • Write them out like the example below. This is one of the background knowledge sources. It was very hard, so I did it for you.
    • DO NOT SPEND MORE THAN 40 MINS ON ALL OF THE HOMEWORK - TIME YOURSELF! I want you to just try. It doesn't have to be perfect.
