However, if you choose not to participate in the survey, you may only review vocabulary on Quizlet.

Here is the link to the survey: https://byu.az1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_2nLsBOfMGxVggDz

OR
  • You came to the class and reviewed the things that need to be on Draft 2. You also looked at in-text citations and signal phrases again. We finished up the class with a small Thanksgiving writing activity.

Class Today and Homework

Hello class! Today we will be doing two things. First we will be practicing an Integrated Writing Task, because we will not have time to review it next week (Yay Thanksgiving!) and the following week (Dec 1-5) is the week of your last Integrated Essay Test in the lab. Secondly, we will work on our paragraphs for the Process Analysis Essay.

Integrated Writing Additional Practice
Please follow these instructions:
  • Please open this link in a window--Online Timer. Set the timer for 20 minutes, but DO NOT START IT. Shrink the window so you will be able to see the timer while you are typing.
  • Open the document in the IW Additional Practice folder (located in your class folder) called “IW Additional Practice - Writing.” Please write your name and class time in the upper left hand corner.
  • Open the document called “IW Notes and Planning” if you want to take notes electronically (optional).
  • Your teacher has given you the reading section, face down on your desk. Do not turn it over until she says "Go!" You are free to take notes on it.
  • After reading, follow the teacher for the next step. Go back to the IW Additional Practice folder.  You will see a sound file titled  "IW Additional Practice - Listening." Please listen to it in the preview window OR Open with Quicktime. DO NOT DOUBLE CLICK IT, it will open iTunes and will cause problems.
  • After listening, go back to the document "IW Additional Practice - Writing." Start the Online Timer. YOU MUST START THE TIMER AS SOON AS YOU FINISHED THE LISTENING.  You have 20 minutes to plan and write your essay.
  • When you are finished writing your essay, please select your text and write down the word count in the indicated space in the top left hand corner of the "IW Additional Practice" document.
For the remainder of the time, you can do the following:
  • Review your paragraph by looking at your rubric (pg. 2 in the pink packet), and seeing if you have included all of the things you need for the final draft. I have included a list of body paragraph requirements from the rubric below.
    • Topic sentences use transitions words and clearly connect to the thesis statement by using key words
    • Paragraphs are organized chronologically or logically (there is a reason the body paragraphs are in the order they are)
    • Uses basic transitions between paragraph commentary & details as well as between paragraphs to help the reader
    • Is clearly a process essay (not a classification or a cause-effect essay)
    • Provides support or commentary for each step/element/detail (i.e. by using examples, explanation, warnings, hints, or effects)
    • Explains unfamiliar vocabulary words or concepts related to the topic for the reader
  • Write another body paragraph for your essay (this is your homework anyway).
  • Work on your annotated bibliography (reference page) for your Draft 1 on Friday. Remember that you need 4 reference sources with notes like we have practiced in class. You can create the APA references using the Citation Machine that I showed you in class. The notes need to be in your own words. :) I provided an example of a student's annotated bibliography below.
  • Study for your Academic Vocabulary List 9 Quiz tomorrow. You will be tested on collocates, similarly to the quiz we had on collocates before where you choose the correct word to put in the sentence from a box of words. You can study for the collocates with the Quizlet link below.
Homework
  • Write another body paragraph for your Process Analysis Essay
    • Please type and print out or bring a handwritten copy to class tomorrow

Here is the PowerPoint that we looked at today in class.

Homework:
    • Read p. 183-185, and do Exercise 3 & 4 (Due tomorrow)
    • Start thinking about your topic
      • What do you want to write about?

    Lab Day

Welcome to class today! There are 3 required activities that you will need to complete, and then you can take the rest of the time to revise and edit your essay.

Please remember to read all of these instructions carefully so that your essay will be the best that it can be!

    1. Take this survey about your homework from last night:

    2. Check how many academic words you use in your essay using the Academic Word List Checker.

*You will need be able to copy and paste the text of your latest draft (Draft 2), so make sure that you have downloaded it from turnitin.com or have it available on a flash drive or from your email.
    1. Go to http://www.lextutor.ca/vp/eng in a new tab or window.
    2. Copy the text of your essay (not reference page).
    3. Delete the words in the big white box labeled "MAIN TEXT"
    4. Paste the text of your essay into the "MAIN TEXT", and click the yellow "SUBMIT" button.
    5. On the left hand side of the screen, there are the yellow words "Academic Words (academic)." Next to that, in the 4th column is a percentage. This is the percent of academic words in your essay.
    6. Write down the percentage at the end of your essay like this: AWL 7.6%. For your final draft you will need at least 7% of your essay to be academic words. If you have lower than 7%, you can look over your essay when you start to revise it.
    3. Try to put your essay in APA format as best as you can.

We've talked about APA references, but part of an essay that is important is the formatting. Formatting is how the paper looks on paper. It makes your paper look nice and people (especially teachers!) will be happier to read your papers if they are formatted correctly.

    Correctly-Formatted APA Essays should have:
    • A title page with page numbers
    • 1 inch margins (top, bottom, and sides)
    • Times New Roman or Calibri font
    • 12 pt font size
    • Double-spaced
    • No spaces between the paragraphs, just indents
I am not expecting you to be perfect with this, but I want you to try to put your paper in APA format today.
    • APA Paper Template - This is a template, which means that it has the correct framework for your essay, but it doesn't have the actual essay. You can use it to start the formatting for your own paper. I would suggest downloading this, and then putting your essay into the format that is set up already for you. This has a perfect example of a Reference page.
    •  The Most Effective Economic System - This is a sample Compare/Contrast paper (with correct APA formatting) so you can see how the template looks with an essay in it. :)
    Rest of Class Time:
When you finish the two activities above, work on revising your essay. You can use the feedback from Draft 1, Draft 2, and your peer review to revise. Here are some things to think about before you turn your paper in:
    • Thesis Statement: Do you have a purpose and points of comparison? (see page 155 for help on purposes, and page 156 for example thesis statements)
    • Paragraphs: Do you have information and facts to support your ideas? Are your paragraphs organized clearly with transition words?
    • Purpose: Did you include your purpose in EACH paragraph? Usually this is the concluding sentence of each paragraph.
    • References and citations: Do you have three references? Do you have an in-text citation for each reference? Did you correctly cite and reference? (Refer to class handouts and teachers comments)
    Final Draft Requirements:
    • Yellow Rubric, Tutor Form, Peer Review (Packet) – Due Friday 5pm, in my box in Rm 103.
    • Final Draft – Due Friday 5 pm, on turnitin.com
      • Title Page (1 page)
      • Main essay (at least 2 pages)
      • At the end of the essay, show the AWL %
      • References page (1 page)

***If you have done all of the 3 activities and revised your essay, you can:
    • Study for your Academic A Vocabulary List 3 Quiz tomorrow
      • Collocates found in your packet in the third section
      • Study the practice quiz you took today
    • Check your grades on Micrograde. You can go straight to Micrograde from the "Grades" tab at the top of this blog.

    Please follow these instructions:
    1. Open the document in the IW Writing #2 folder called “IW 2 YOUR NAME”
    2. Save the document as “IW 2 Sarah Lutz” (or whatever your name happens to be!) on the desktop. You will write your response there.

    4. Reading: When your teacher tells you to, please click this link and start your reading. Reading Passage
    5. Listening: You have two minutes to listen to the lecture. You may only listen to the lecture one time. Take good notes. Open the listening passage found in the Integrated Writing #2 folder titled "Effect of television." Check your headphones and if the listening passage works.

Please save your document(s), then select them and drag them into the folder titled "Finished IW" in the classes folder. If you need help with any of these things, raise your hand and I will help you.

After the integrated writing, you can do the following:

    Classwork and Homework

Today, we reviewed paragraphing and did an activity with ordering a paragraph. Next, we talked about using support for our paragraphs and add support into a paragraph. Additionally, we watched an English Etiquette video. Here is the PowerPoint that we looked at today.

    Homework:
    • Choose a topic sentence from your pre-writing homework and write 3 pieces of support for that topic sentence.
    • Use the topic sentence and support to write one body paragraph using the strategies we have learned this week in class. You don't need to print it, just type it up and save/email it to yourself because we will be in the lab tomorrow!
    Additional Support Websites:
    Paragraph Example

Topic Sentence: The first of the similarities between these two systems is the motivation for progression.

    Support:

    Command system
    • The citizens have little to no motivation to work
      • U.S.S.R. citizens
    • No real change in economic values
      • sustainable with little to no surplus
    Traditional system
    • There is motivation to work, but not to change.
      • African societies
    • Economy is based on necessity
      • No more or no less, sometimes even lack
    Paragraph:

The first of the similarities between these two systems is the motivation for progress. In the command system, citizens have little to no motivation to work because there is no room for upward mobility. In the U.S.S.R., the citizens were not able to change social status or position once placed in a job--often staying in the same job they were assigned their entire lives. This created a lack of incentive to be good at their jobs, because there was no reason to be better. This also caused a deep divide in the classes furthering the lack of motivation. Another reason for the lack of motivation came through the lack of change in economic values, or supply and demand, because the command system's purpose to create sustainability with little to no surplus. On the other hand, in the traditional system, there is incentive to work because the citizens must work in order to survive, but there is no motivation to change the way things are done. This can be seen in some African societies where there is an order of things done the same way for centuries. This can be seen as a positive thing, except when there is no progression in technology because no change has occurred. This can also be perpetuated by the economic property of the necessity of the commerce created in a traditional system, owing to the fact that these economies sometimes lack some of the essential citizens' needs. All in all, the systems are similar because of the little progress made due to the lack of motivation.

    Classwork and Homework

Today, we first looked at "building block" and "thrown in the deep end" styles of learning,  and then we reviewed topic sentences. Next, we learned about developmental paragraphs as well as paragraphing. In paragraphing, we learned about how to identify and organize different elements of a paragraph. We worked on a paragraphing worksheet that helped us identify the parts, and then went over the correct answers with the key.

Here is the PowerPoint that we used today in class.

    Homework
    1. Read “Support” pg. 23-24 in your textbook.
    2. Complete the back ("Practice Exercise") of the yellow paper “Body Paragraph Writing”
You can start working on Draft 1, but nothing will be due in class tomorrow.

    Introduction
Thesis – Although command and traditional economic systems are different in how they function, they are actually similar in their treatment of individuality in their citizens in that motivation for progression is low, the opportunities given to individuals are little to none, and that citizens are already given set roles in society.

    Item 1 – Command system
    Item 2 – Traditional system

    Item 1 – Command system
    Item 2 – Traditional system
Brainstorming – Very limited to what a person can do, citizens have little to no rights, and can be punished for their "disobedience" to the system.

    Item 2 – Traditional system
Brainstorming – In Inuit societies, they needed to depend on skill, and depended on those with skill but the average person wouldn't be able to provide.
