Classwork and Homework

Today, we reviewed paragraphing and did an activity with ordering a paragraph. Next, we talked about using support for our paragraphs and add support into a paragraph. Additionally, we watched an English Etiquette video. Here is the PowerPoint that we looked at today.

Homework:
  • Choose a topic sentence from your pre-writing homework and write 3 pieces of support for that topic sentence.
  • Use the topic sentence and support to write one body paragraph using the strategies we have learned this week in class. You don't need to print it, just type it up and save/email it to yourself because we will be in the lab tomorrow!
Additional Support Websites:
Paragraph Example

Topic Sentence: The first of the similarities between these two systems is the motivation for progression.

Support:

Command system
  • The citizens have little to no motivation to work
    • U.S.S.R. citizens
  • No real change in economic values
    • sustainable with little to no surplus
Traditional system
  • There is motivation to work, but not to change.
    • African societies
  • Economy is based on necessity
    • No more or no less, sometimes even lack
Paragraph:

The first of the similarities between these two systems is the motivation for progress. In the command system, citizens have little to no motivation to work because there is no room for upward mobility. In the U.S.S.R., the citizens were not able to change social status or position once placed in a job--often staying in the same job they were assigned their entire lives. This created a lack of incentive to be good at their jobs, because there was no reason to be better. This also caused a deep divide in the classes furthering the lack of motivation. Another reason for the lack of motivation came through the lack of change in economic values, or supply and demand, because the command system's purpose to create sustainability with little to no surplus. On the other hand, in the traditional system, there is incentive to work because the citizens must work in order to survive, but there is no motivation to change the way things are done. This can be seen in some African societies where there is an order of things done the same way for centuries. This can be seen as a positive thing, except when there is no progression in technology because no change has occurred. This can also be perpetuated by the economic property of the necessity of the commerce created in a traditional system, owing to the fact that these economies sometimes lack some of the essential citizens' needs. All in all, the systems are similar because of the little progress made due to the lack of motivation.

Classwork and Homework

Today, we reviewed thesis statements from the homework that you did last Wednesday. Remember that thesis statements should:
  1. Be a complete sentence.
  2. Do not simply announce the topic. Instead, express an opinion, attitude, or idea.
  3. Express an opinion in your thesis statement, not just a fact.
  4. Focus on only one idea toward the topic.
Secondly, we talked about topic sentences and developmental paragraphs. Here is the PowerPoint that we used today in class.

Homework:
  1. Finish your question and topic sentences using the format below. Remember that you must have a question because it lets you know the “why” of your thesis statement. This can be typed or handwritten.
  2. Read “Support” pg. 23-24 in your textbook.

My thesis statement: ________________________________________________.
Question: __________________________________________________________.
Topic sentences:
  1. _____________________________________________________________.
  2. _____________________________________________________________.
  3. _____________________________________________________________.

Journal Week 2 (May 27-30)

At the ELC we “expect excellence” of our students and teachers. Each week we post a quote about excellence on the walls of the ELC for people to think about. One of the quotes by President Hinckley says:
  • “I hope you will simply do what you can do in the best way you know how. If you do so, you will witness miracles come to pass."
Think about this quote and then write about how this quote can help you to be a more excellent student.

*Because this is a short week, you will only need to write 1 1/2 pages in the Blue Book, or 3/4 of a page (double-spaced) typed.

Outline Homework

Today in class, we learned about writing Integrated Essays and then practiced with doing one. Tonight for homework, you must create an outline for your first paper (Compare & Contrast) on economic systems. Use the background knowledge worksheet, the venn diagram, and your written thesis statement to create this. This outline will provide you with the basics, you just fill in the information! :) I will show you how to do it in the example below. The information you must fill in is represented by the blue text. This is due by NOON tomorrow. Please email the digital copy to me, or hand in the packet to me

EXAMPLE:
Compare/Contrast Outline—Point-by-Point

Topic: Economic Systems
2 Items: Command system and traditional system
3 Sub Topics: Motivation for progression, opportunities given to individuals, citizens already given set roles

Introduction
Thesis – Although command and traditional economic systems are different in how they function, they are actually similar in their treatment of individuality in their citizens in that motivation for progression is low, the opportunities given to individuals are little to none, and that citizens are already given set roles in society.

Sub topic 1 - Motivation for progression
Item 1 – Command system
Item 2 – Traditional system
Brainstorming – In U.S.S.R. in the 70s & 80s = low motivation to get better; societies in Africa are unchanging and have no upward mobility; no room for a person to move up

Sub topic 2 - Opportunities given to individuals
Item 1 – Command system
Item 2 – Traditional system
Brainstorming – Very limited to what a person can do, citizens have little to no rights, and can be punished for their "disobedience" to the system.

Sub topic 3 - Citizens have a set role in society
Item 1 – Command system
Item 2 – Traditional system
Brainstorming – In Inuit societies, they needed to depend on skill, and depended on those with skill but the average person wouldn't be able to provide.

Classwork & Homework

Classwork- Today in class, we went through the homework from yesterday. I am posting a link to both classes collective answers about the background information.
We also talked about setting SMART goals and our motivation behind setting goals and went over the important elements of thesis statements as well. You can view the PowerPoint here.

Homework- Please turn in the following tomorrow May 23rd during class:

1.  Read pp. 102-104 in your textbook and complete Exercises 1 & 2.
2. Venn Diagram for the two economic systems you want to compare, including three (3) points of comparison or contrast. You can download the Venn Diagram here, or you may replicate it in your notes.
  • You must write 3 things that you know about the first economic system, 3 things you know about the second system, and 3 things that they both share.
  • It will be better if you choose things you can contrast that have similar points of comparison. You can see that I have similar points of comparison below: environment, change, and types of societies/governments that these economies are found in.
Example

3. A thesis statement (1 sentence!) that follow the rules of thesis statements (pg. 102-103 in your book), has a clear purpose (pg. 155), and has at least 3 points of comparison (sub topics).

Example:
Although command and traditional economic systems are different in how they function, they are actually similar in their treatment of individuality in their citizens in that motivation for progression is low, the opportunities given to individuals are little to none, and that citizens are already given set rolls in society.

Although command and traditional economic systems are different in how they function, they are actually similar in their treatment of individuality in their citizens in that 1) motivation for progression is low2) the opportunities given to individuals are little to none, and that 3) citizens are already given set rolls in society.

The underlined parts are the purpose, and the numbered italics are the 3 points of comparison.

Practice Journal Prompt

Open up a Word document and answer the prompt below:

Winston Churchill said “Writing is an adventure.” Sometimes on adventures we face challenges. Sometimes when learning to write in English, we face challenges such as being discouraged or not liking an assignment. Tell me about some of the things you can do to stay motivated to write, even when you feel discouraged or unhappy. For example, some people try to remember their goals for learning to write in English, and that helps them to work hard even if they don’t want to. What do you do?  Write at least 2 things that you do, or can do to stay motivated to write in English. You will have 15 minutes to write.

Please save the Word Document in the Student Folder under your name.
