Today in Lab

Today in the lab, we will be creating a turnitin.com account and seeing how it works, looking at your paragraphs and reviewing them, studying for your quiz tomorrow, and having additional time for you to write your Draft 1.

2. Download this Sample Student Paper and upload it to turnitin.com. Look at the originality score. How much of the paper is plagiarized?

3. Open up the paragraph that you did for homework on your computer, and I will come around and check it. 

4. Choose a classmate to review your paragraph. As you look at your classmate's paper, answer the following questions on a piece of paper that you will turn in to me. Discuss with your classmates the good things that you saw in their paper as well as the things that they need to work on.

• Do they have a topic sentence? Write down their topic sentence.
• Can you identify the support in their paper? Was the support given before the commentary?
• How much commentary does their paper have? Is there more commentary than support?
• Do they finish the paragraph with a concluding sentence? Does it support the paragraph?

When you finish, you may do one or both of the following:

• Begin writing the next body paragraph that you have tonight for homework.

Classwork and Homework

Today, we reviewed paragraphing and did an activity with ordering a paragraph. Next, we talked about using support for our paragraphs and add support into a paragraph. Additionally, we watched an English Etiquette video. Here is the PowerPoint that we looked at today.

Homework:

• Choose a topic sentence from your pre-writing homework and write 3 pieces of support for that topic sentence. 
• Use the topic sentence and support to write one body paragraph using the strategies we have learned this week in class. You don't need to print it, just type it up and save/email it to yourself because we will be in the lab tomorrow!

• Types of Economic Systems (website). Shmoop.com - this is student help website that has a lot of information on different topics. This information is more detailed.
• Types of Economic Systems (PowerPoint). This is a PowerPoint that is available through a slide sharing site. The information is basic.
• Comparative Economic Systems (website). This is also a student help website specifically for social studies and subjects relating to them. The information is the most detailed.

Paragraph Example: 

Topic Sentence: The first of the similarities between these two systems is the motivation for progression. 

Support:

Command system- 

• The citizens have little to no motivation to work
• U.S.S.R. citizens
• No real change in economic values
• sustainable with little to no surplus

Traditional system- 

• There is motivation to work, but not to change.
• African societies
• Economy is based on necessity
• No more or no less, sometimes even lack

Paragraph: 

The first of the similarities between these two systems is the motivation for progress. In the command system, citizens have little to no motivation to work because there is no room for upward mobility. In the U.S.S.R., the citizens were not able to change social status or position once placed in a job--often staying in the same job they were assigned their entire lives. This created a lack of incentive to be good at their jobs, because there was no reason to be better. This also caused a deep divide in the classes furthering the lack of motivation. Another reason for the lack of motivation came through the lack of change in economic values, or supply and demand, because the command system's purpose to create sustainability with little to no surplus. On the other hand, in the traditional system, there is incentive to work because the citizens must work in order to survive, but there is no motivation to change the way things are done. This can be seen in some African societies where there is an order of things done the same way for centuries. This can be seen as a positive thing, except when there is no progression in technology because no change has occurred. This can also be perpetuated by the economic property of the necessity of the commerce created in a traditional system, owing to the fact that these economies sometimes lack some of the essential citizens' needs. All in all, the systems are similar because of the little progress made due to the lack of motivation.

Classwork and Homework

Today, we first looked at "building block" and "thrown in the deep end" styles of learning,  and then we reviewed topic sentences. Next, we learned about developmental paragraphs as well as paragraphing. In paragraphing, we learned about how to identify and organize different elements of a paragraph. We worked on a paragraphing worksheet that helped us identify the parts, and then went over the correct answers with the key.

1. Read “Support” pg. 23-24 in your textbook.
2. Complete the back ("Practice Exercise") of the yellow paper “Body Paragraph Writing”

Today in class we review thesis statements, worked on revising our thesis statements, talked about topic sentences and began out outlines for our Compare Contrast Essays. You can access the PowerPoint for today here.

Homework:
For tomorrow: Complete your outline for your Compare Contrast essay on types of economic systems. Choose 1 type (block or point-by-point). Here is the digital copy of the outline that I promised - Digital Copy of Outline. The example below can help you organize it. The blue text represents what you need to fill out.

• You can write out your outline (legibly) in the yellow packet and turn it to my box in room 103 by NOON tomorrow

For Monday: Write for 20 minutes in your journal with the prompt I've given you.You can hand write it in a notebook or Bluebook or you can type it and print it out.

Introduction

            Thesis – Although command and traditional economic systems are different in how they function, they are actually similar in their treatment of individuality in their citizens in that motivation for progression is low, the opportunities given to individuals are little to none, and that citizens are already given set roles in society.

Brainstorming – In U.S.S.R. in the 70s & 80s = low motivation to get better; societies in Africa are unchanging and have no upward mobility; no room for a person to move up

Brainstorming – Very limited to what a person can do, citizens have little to no rights, and can be punished for their "disobedience" to the system.

Brainstorming – In Inuit societies, they needed to depend on skill, and depended on those with skill but the average person wouldn't be able to provide.
